A composed display under Michael Carrick kept United’s late-season momentum alive as Brentford’s unbeaten run came to an end.
Manchester United strengthened their bid for a return to the Champions League with a confident victory over Brentford, moving to within two points of the qualification places and further reinforcing Michael Carrick’s growing case to remain in charge beyond his interim spell.
United entered the match knowing that every point could shape their European ambitions, and they responded with one of their most assured performances in recent weeks. Against a Brentford side that had become difficult to beat, Carrick’s team imposed themselves early and controlled key moments to secure a valuable result.
The home side’s midfield once again provided the platform. Kobbie Mainoo dictated the tempo with maturity beyond his years, while Casemiro continued his surprising scoring form by opening the scoring. Bruno Fernandes, meanwhile, added another decisive contribution with his 19th league assist of the season, setting up Benjamin Sesko for the goal that ultimately sealed the contest.
Brentford arrived in Manchester unbeaten in six matches and with a reputation for resilience after drawing five of those games. But United’s intensity from the opening whistle immediately placed the visitors under pressure. Mainoo drove through midfield in the early exchanges before finding Amad Diallo, whose close-range effort was blocked before Brentford escaped.
United’s pressure eventually told from a set piece. Fernandes delivered a deep ball into the area, Harry Maguire redirected it across goal, and Casemiro rose at the far post to head home. The veteran midfielder marked his ninth league goal of the campaign with an emotional celebration in front of the home supporters.
Despite falling behind, Brentford responded well and began to test United’s defense. Keane Lewis-Potter found dangerous space on the left, while Igor Thiago repeatedly threatened the back line but failed to convert several promising chances. United were forced into periods of sustained defending as Brentford pushed for an equalizer.
The match remained open, with both sides creating opportunities. Fernandes nearly launched another attack after dispossessing Nathan Collins in midfield, but the final ball lacked precision. Brentford continued to threaten, and Thiago came close again before United delivered a clinical second goal just before halftime.
After winning possession deep in their own half, Fernandes surged forward and picked out Sesko. The striker shifted onto his right foot and fired a powerful finish beyond the goalkeeper to double United’s lead and give the hosts breathing room.
United looked increasingly comfortable after the break. Carrick adjusted his back line following an injury concern to Diallo, introducing Noussair Mazraoui to help solidify the defense. The tactical change allowed United to absorb Brentford’s pressure while still moving the ball with confidence.
Although Brentford continued to attack, their finishing let them down. Thiago in particular missed several opportunities that could have changed the game. United’s defense, led by Maguire, held firm under repeated pressure, with the defender putting in a determined display despite taking several heavy knocks late in the match.
Brentford eventually found the net through Mathias Jensen from distance, but the late goal only reduced the margin and did little to change the outcome.
The victory gives Manchester United renewed belief heading into a difficult meeting with Liverpool and keeps the club firmly in the race for a Champions League place. More significantly, it offered further evidence that Carrick has brought stability and direction at a moment when the season could still end on a high note.
What stands out most is not just the result, but the growing sense of identity in this United side. Carrick has managed to restore structure without sacrificing attacking intent. If this form continues, the debate over his long-term future may become impossible for the club to ignore.
