Ongoing clashes in Karen State have led to civilian damage and cross-border concerns in neighboring Thailand.
Fierce fighting continues around Walley Strategic Hill in Myanmar’s Myawaddy Township, where government forces have escalated airstrikes while opposition fighters claim to have seized several nearby military positions.
According to local sources, clashes intensified on April 29 as Myanmar’s military deployed aircraft, including Y-12 planes and jet fighters, to carry out repeated bombing runs over the contested. Meanwhile, resistance forces have reportedly captured multiple outposts surrounding the strategic hill, tightening their grip on the area.
A source familiar with the situation described a tense standoff, with opposition fighters attempting to isolate troops positioned on the hill. The source said movement for government forces has become increasingly restricted due to sniper fire and sustained pressure from advancing fighters.
Despite the heavy aerial bombardment, logistical challenges appear to be affecting military operations. The distance between key bases has limited artillery support, and reports indicate difficulties in delivering supplies to troops stationed at the hilltop position.
The ongoing battle has also taken a toll on nearby civilian. Airstrikes have damaged homes in Walley town, raising concerns about the humanitarian impact. Additionally, shelling from the conflict zone has reportedly crossed into neighboring Thailand, prompting authorities there to protest and evacuate residents living near the border.
The confrontation traces back to late March, when forces aligned with the Karen National Liberation Army and allied groups launched an offensive to seize the military position. Since then, the area has become a focal point of sustained and escalating combat.
A local source described as increasingly dire, saying on the hill are under constant pressure and rely heavily on air support, with limited access to reinforcements or supplies.
As fighting shows no signs of easing, Walley Strategic Hill remains a critical battleground in Myanmar’s broader conflict. The combination of intensified airstrikes, territorial gains by opposition forces, and growing cross-border repercussions underscores strategic and humanitarian significance.
This situation highlights how localized can quickly escalate into broader regional concerns, especially when civilian areas and neighboring countries are affected. The reliance on air alongside ground offensives suggests a prolonged and complex confrontation ahead. Without a shift toward dialogue, the humanitarian risks are likely to grow.
