Despite seizing the town, resistance leaders warn that continued military strikes and instability remain major threats.
The Chin People’s Union says its allied forces have taken control of Falam town in northern Chin State after months of intense fighting, though leaders caution that the broader conflict is far from resolved.
According to the group’s general secretary, Salai Yawman, resistance forces succeeded in capturing Falam following a prolonged six-month campaign against Myanmar’s military. The offensive, which began in late 2025, saw government troops deploy an estimated 1,500 to 1,800 soldiers in a coordinated push across multiple fronts.
Despite reinforcements and sustained military pressure, resistance fighters say they were able to hold their ground and eventually gain control of the town. Reports indicate that hundreds of soldiers were killed during the clashes, with additional troops brought in to replace losses as the fighting dragged on.
Salai Yawman credited cooperation among allied Chin groups for the outcome, noting that joint defensive efforts played a decisive role in resisting the military’s advance. However, he emphasized that the situation remains fluid, with further expected as both sides regroup.
While the capture of Falam marks a significant development, resistance leaders acknowledged ongoing challenges, including limited manpower and resources. They suggested that stronger logistical support could have prevented any possibility of the military regaining ground in the area.
The conflict has also extended beyond Falam. On April 29, a military aircraft reportedly carried out an airstrike in the town of Mindat, underscoring the continued use of aerial in the region. Local sources have urged civilians to remain cautious and follow safety measures amid ongoing bombardments.
Salai Yawman described the operation as a meaningful achievement but stressed that the broader struggle continues, noting that while Falam has been secured, “there is still much work ahead and more actions to take.”
The fall of Falam represents a notable shift in control within Chin State, but it does not signal an end to hostilities. With continued airstrikes and the potential for renewed offensives, the region remains unstable, and the path forward appears uncertain.
This development highlights both the resilience and limitations of local resistance movements. While capturing territory is a major milestone, sustaining control in the face of continued military pressure is an entirely different challenge. The coming months will likely determine whether this momentum can be maintained.
